Funded Graduate Studentships

Dr. Josh Lepawsky in the Department of Geography at Memorial
University of Newfoundland is seeking graduate students (MA or PhD)
interested in studying the international trade and traffic of
electronic waste (e-waste). These studentships are funded through a
Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council Environmental Issues
Research Grant.

Ideal applicants will be recent or current undergraduates (for MA
positions) or graduates (for PhD positions) with some background in
cultural, economic, or political geography (or cognate disciplines,
including STS), and/or Asian Studies. The ability to conduct
fieldwork in Asian contexts, including but not limited to China,
India, and Singapore, would be especially advantageous.

Post-doctoral position in bioinformatics (-omics analysis)

The candidate should have expertise in computer-based large-scale data analysis, including genome and cDNA assembly and annotation, comparative genome and proteome analysis, and software tool development under Unix/Linux. Experience in database development is desirable.

Graduate student position (PhD) in bioinformatics

A
position is available to identify (primary and secondary structure)
motifs involved in a novel RNA trans-splicing process that we
discovered recently (Marande & Burger 2007, Science 318:415).
Predicted motifs and postulated mechanisms will be the basis for
in-vitro experiments, which, in turn, will help to narrow the search
space
of in-silico analyses.

MS in Resource and Applied Economics

The Department of Resource Economics at the University of Nevada, Reno,
has received additional funding to offer three research assistantships
to new Graduate Students starting in fall 2009. The assistantships
include a stipend of $18,000 per year, a partial tuition waiver, and
health insurance coverage. Conditional on strong performance and in
absence of any unforeseen shortfall in funding, the full assistantship
will be available for up to five years. While we give preference to PhD
students, well-qualified MS students are also encouraged to apply for
this funding opportunity.

Our graduate program provides a strong foundation in microeconomic
theory and quantitative methods, with focus on Resource and
Environmental Economics, Regional Economics, and Applied Econometrics.
