PhD position High efficiency amplifiers for piezoelectric loads

Job description
The PhD in the Integrated Circuit Design (ICD) group focuses on the research and realization of integrated high efficiency amplifiers for piezoelectric loads. Amplifying the noise cancelling signals for piezoelectric panels is complicated because of the high voltages (up to 100V), erratic load impedance and tough distortion requirements. This renders existing amplifier solutions too large and power hungry. High efficiency amplifier techniques like class D switching amplifiers exist, but we have to move beyond that in order to satisfy the demands for higher efficiency, compactness and low distortion. More information about the ICD group can be found on http://icd.el.utwente.nl

Requirements
University Graduate
What we ask
You have completed an Electrical Engineering university degree (M.Sc. level) or are about to graduate in an area that is relevant to our research. You are skilled in mixed-signal integrated circuit design, and have knowledge of linear- and switching amplifiers and power converters. You can translate system-level requirements to specifications and organize your own research. Also, you possess good writing and presentation skills.

Job description
Understanding how genetic variation affects brain functioning related to general intelligence is one of the greatest scientific challenges of the 21st century. Advances in both molecular genetics and functional and structural neuroimaging have provided the tools necessary to explore the effects of genetic variants on brain functioning. Identifying the brain mechanisms that underlie intelligence is paramount to our understanding of how individual differences in general intelligence emerge and how such differences may confer vulnerability to cognitive dysfunction. This project aims to identify these brain mechanisms by combining expertise from two excellent research groups, using an imaging genetics approach towards human intelligence. This project is a collaboration between the Donders Institute for Brain, Cognition and Behaviour, Nijmegen, and the Centre for Neurogenomics and Cognitive Research, Amsterdam. You will be based within the Cognitive Neurology group at the Donders Institute ( http://www.ru.nl/donders) and will have frequent contacts with the genomics group at CNCR ( http://www.cncr.nl).
