Established in 1962, the São Paulo Research Foundation, FAPESP, is one of the main research funding agencies in Brazil. With a US$ 400 million budget for 2009, it supports 11,000 scholarships and 8,000 research awards. In addition to supporting all fields of science, FAPESP has special research programs in biodiversity, bioenergy, global climate change, neuroscience, information technology and public policy. The State of São Paulo, in Brazil, is a dynamic, fast growing center with a population of 40 million people, producing 40% of Brazil’s industrial output. Higher education and research institutions in São Paulo awarded 4,900 PhD degrees last year.

The HITLab Australia (HITLab AU) is a specialist human interface technology teaching and research centre developed by the University of Tasmania within the School of Computing and Information Systems. Established in 2008, it partners with the world-renowned HITLab US (www.hitl.washington.edu) based at the University of Washington in Seattle and has links with the HITLab NZ (www.hitlabnz.org) based at the University of Canterbury in New Zealand. We undertake research in a range of areas including, interactive surfaces, visualization, mixed reality, tangible interfaces, gaming and augmented reality.
We are now advertising 6 fully funded PhD scholarships in advanced interface technology.
Our ideal candidate will be able to demonstrate an ability to both undertake basic research and be able to build high-quality prototype systems to demonstrate their research, as well as making a strong contribution to the group’s publication activities and industrial research collaborations. PhD candidates should have achieved (or expect to achieve) a first class honours or equivalent in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Mathematics, or a closely related discipline, and have a keen interest in research.
Outstanding students from outside of these disciplines will also be considered for these scholarships if they demonstrate how they can complete each research project within the HITLab whilst enrolled in a different discipline.
Applications from International Students will be considered. Such students may not be eligible for the Elite Scholarships but other sources of scholarship may be offered.

Applications are invited for a three-years, fully funded PhD studentship, open to candidates in the UK/EU or UK permanent resident only. The studentship will be funded at the normal rate (full home student fees plus a tax-free grant of up to £13,000), with the opportunity of undertaking additional paid undergraduate teaching. For overseas student only the tuition fee could be covered. Overseas candidates need to clearly state in their application that they would be able to cover their maintenance in order for their applications to be considered.
