Australia: 6 PhD Studentships in Human Interface Technology

The HITLab Australia (HITLab AU) is a specialist human interface technology teaching and research centre developed by the University of Tasmania within the School of Computing and Information Systems. Established in 2008, it partners with the world-renowned HITLab US (www.hitl.washington.edu) based at the University of Washington in Seattle and has links with the HITLab NZ (www.hitlabnz.org) based at the University of Canterbury in New Zealand. We undertake research in a range of areas including, interactive surfaces, visualization, mixed reality, tangible interfaces, gaming and augmented reality.

We are now advertising 6 fully funded PhD scholarships in advanced interface technology.

Our ideal candidate will be able to demonstrate an ability to both undertake basic research and be able to build high-quality prototype systems to demonstrate their research, as well as making a strong contribution to the group’s publication activities and industrial research collaborations. PhD candidates should have achieved (or expect to achieve) a first class honours or equivalent in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Mathematics, or a closely related discipline, and have a keen interest in research.

Outstanding students from outside of these disciplines will also be considered for these scholarships if they demonstrate how they can complete each research project within the HITLab whilst enrolled in a different discipline.

Applications from International Students will be considered. Such students may not be eligible for the Elite Scholarships but other sources of scholarship may be offered.

Australian Postgraduate Award Industry PhD Scholarships

Scholarship Description Australian Postgraduate Award Industry PhD Scholarships

Two Australian Postgraduate Industry Awards (APAIs), each worth $26,669 per annum (tax free) for three-years, are available for postgraduate research towards the degree of Doctor of Philosophy. Successful applicants will conduct research to contribute to infrastructure development for integration of renewable and distributed power generation into electricity grid systems. One APAI will conduct research on power quality aspects related to the integration of renewable and distributed power generation, and the other will carry out research on network control and protection issues associated with the integration of renewable and distributed energy resources. Candidates with undergraduate honours (Class I or II(1)) or Masters degrees by research in electrical engineering with power engineering major are invited to apply. AUSTRALIA; QUT Creative Industries Precinct PhD Student Scholarship

Scholarship Description

A three-year PhD scholarship exists at QUT’s Creative Industries Precinct with Professor Greg Hearn and Dr Ruth Bridgstock. The PhD project will fall within the Creative Workforce research program of the ARC Centre for Excellence in Creative Industries and Innovation, which explores various aspects of formal and informal education for the creative economy. It will be associated with the “Creating Innovators” research project, which aims to build and test theory about the development and deployment of ‘innovative career capabilities’ in professionals working in the key sectors of science and technology, and the creative industries. A PhD position is available in the UNSW@ADFA quantum optics laboratory in the area of experimental quantum optics. The PhD project will be in the area of experimental coherent-state quantum computing. A PhD stipend of $A25,000 per annum and tuition-fee remission scholarship worth approximately $A40,000 per annum is available to suitably qualified applicants. Scholarship Description

The NSW Government has developed a postgraduate scholarship in honour of the late Professor Peter Cullen AO FTSE. Professor Cullen contributed significantly to water resource management in Australia, and NSW. The program is jointly funded by various New South Wales Government Water Agencies, including the Department of Water and Energy, Sydney Catchment Authority, State Water, Hunter Water Corporation and Sydney Water Corporation. The aim of the scholarship is to: • Improve our understanding of how rivers, groundwater, wetlands and estuaries function and respond to enhanced management • Improve the linkages between water science and water management in NSW • Provide research opportunities for water specialists in NSW. The Scholarship is open to a first year PhD student enrolled at Australian University.
